I had a level II ultrasound which revealed a small blockage of both fetal kidneys. The doctor said this was common in boys, but that there was a small chance that this could also be a marker for Down Syndrome. She said the only way to know for sure was through amnio. How common is this correlation?

Down’s syndrome is caused by a genetic mutation and can be easily screened by obtaining some of the fetal DNA from an amniocentesis procedure because the fetal DNA will be present in the fluid as it is sloughed off.
Any DNA abnormality can cause improper organ development and malformation so it is a very small percentage of Down’s syndrome and kidney obstruction being linked. So how do you differentiate between the two possibilities? You have to do a test of some sort.
If the amnio shows that there is no Down’s syndrome, then the kidney obstruction is purely in the kidneys or ureters.
If the amnio confirms Down’s syndrome, it may or may not be related to the kidneys at all but there is a higher possibility of it being related to developmental abnormality in the presence of Down’s.
its not that common but not uncommon ether was there any thing else as there’s usually other thing .. IE hart ?
