Rep. Gabby Giffords received a standing ovation when she arrived to the State of the Union on Tuesday evening. Smiling and bespectacled in a red suit, Giffords seemed to briefly acknowledge the applause before settling into her seat. she was later hugged and kissed on the cheek by President Obama on his walk to the podium.

Her attendance at the State of the Union will prove to be one of her last official acts as a congresswoman, as her office announced in a statement before the speech that she will resign from Congress on Wednesday because, she said, she wants to “do what is best for Arizona.”

“I will recover and will return,” she said in the statement.

Her office said saying she will submit her letter of resignation on Wednesday, after representing Arizona for five years in the House.

Giffords’ final act in Congress – before her resignation goes into effect at the end of the day – will be to vote Wednesday on a bill that imposes tougher penalties on smugglers who use small, low-flying aircraft to avoid radar detection and bring drugs across the Mexican border.

The Democratic congresswoman introduced the legislation along with fellow Arizonan, Republican Jeff Flake. It’s similar to a version that easily passed the House in 2010 but did not make it through the Senate. her office said the current law allows defendants who use ultra-light, single-seat planes to get a lesser penalty than those who use cars or other types of planes to smuggle drugs.

Giffords’ resignation letter ends with a plea for bipartisanship, according to the statement from her office.

“A lot has happened over the past year,” she said. “We cannot change that. But I know on the issues we fought for, we can change things for the better. Jobs, border security, veterans. We can do so much more by working together.”

WARSAW, Poland – A military prosecutor said Tuesday that he tried to commit suicide during a news conference he had called because his own work has been used as a reason supporting plans to close military prosecution offices in Poland.

Col. Mikolaj Przybyl invited reporters and TV crews to his office in the western city of Poznan on Monday to defend the work his office has done and to reject the planned reforms. Midway through it, he asked to be left alone, then shot himself in the head.

Later, people watching coverage from a TVN24 camera that had been left rolling in the room could hear the gunshot being fired and see reporters and officials rushing to Przybyl, who underwent surgery for a facial wound later in the day.

On Tuesday, the military prosecutor said he had intended to commit suicide but didn’t aim the gun correctly in his haste.

“I wanted to commit suicide but I aimed wrong, the shot came too soon,” Przybyl told PAP agency in a telephone interview from his hospital on Tuesday.

“The shot went through the cheek, not through the head because I was in a hurry,” he said. “I was saved by a man who was adjusting the cables. I was afraid he would walk in.”

Krystyna Mackiewicz, the director of Heliodor Swiecicki Hospital, said Tuesday that Przybyl could be discharged in two days.

Przybyl was questioned on Tuesday by military investigators probing the shooting, spokesman Lt. Col. Slawomir Schewe said.

The shooting exposed a long-simmering conflict between the country’s civilian prosecutor general, Andrzej Seremet, and Poland’s chief military prosecutor, Gen. Krzysztof Parulski. Seremet plans to bring military prosecutors under civilian authority, but has not publicly explained his reasoning.

On Tuesday, Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski met separately with Seremet and Parulski in an apparent effort to discuss their differences.

Komorowski later said he saw the entire system of prosecutors’ offices in Poland as flawed.

PAP agency quoted Przybyl as saying he objects to the planned reforms and that he tried to commit suicide “in defense of the honor” of military prosecutors. “I wanted the (military) prosecutor’s office to continue as it is, and under the leadership of Gen. Parulski,” because under him all investigations will be carried out “honestly” and under no pressure, Przybyl said.

He said the plans to close military prosecutors’ offices have been sped up recently during investigations that he is leading into cases concerning alleged corruption by Poland’s military in the purchase of equipment for troops serving in Afghanistan and Iraq.

“the whole weekend of the anniversary, I think is going to be tough,” Barber said recently in an interview in Giffords’s Tucson office.

Barber was shot in the cheek and thigh. He still walks with a cane, meets with a therapist and is working on a part-time basis because of fatigue.

Barber said he has been reliving the terrible moments of the shooting in nightmares and flashbacks as he helps plan events marking the day, which he envisions as a time of togetherness and healing for Tucson.

“this wasn’t just an emotional wound for those of us who were there, but our entire community was shocked — a lot of people still cry when they see me,” he said. “We’re bringing the community together in a way that they came together [after the shooting].”

In the weeks after the shooting, Tucson residents turned out in droves to contribute to memorials at Giffords’s office, the hospital where survivors were treated and in front of the grocery store where the shooting happened. All of the people wounded that day say that neighbors brought food that kept them fed for two months.

Simon said she feels a responsibility to go to all of the events planned Jan. 8, in part because her colleague and friend Gabe Zimmerman and others who were there for Giffords that day were killed.

“It’s emotionally tough sometimes,” she said. “But people got wounded when they came to see Gabby, and as one of her staff, it’s very, very important for me to be there for the community. It’s a privilege and an honor.”

The events include a community-wide ringing of bells at churches and by people throughout the city at 10:11 a.m., the time the shooting broke out; an interfaith service at St. Augustine Cathedral; and a series of talks reflecting the lives of Giffords and the six people killed in the shooting.

The congresswoman survived a gunshot wound to the head and has been undergoing extensive physical and speech therapy in Houston for the past year. it is unclear whether she will attend any of the events.

Speakers will include U.S. District Judge Raner Collins, who will remember shooting victim and fellow federal judge John Roll; Barber, who will speak about Stoddard’s husband, Dory; and Serenity Hammerich, who will talk about her best friend and the youngest shooting victim, 9-year-old Christina-Taylor Green.

Florida School District Denies Police Were Called Over Student Kiss

FORT MYERS, Fla. – a Florida school district on Tuesday dismissed reports that an administrator called police after two 12-year-old students shared a kiss on the playground.

According to reports Monday, two female students were debating who liked a 12-year-old boy more when one of the girls walked over and kissed the boy. Lee County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to Orange River Elementary School in Fort Myers, Fla., reportedly in response to the incident.

However, a statement issued by the school district Tuesday said authorities were “not called because one student kissed another on the cheek.”

According to the statement, there was a “physical altercation” between two female students that prompted an investigation by authorities. During the investigation, a “separate, non-school related situation” was uncovered that required police and officials with the Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF) be contacted.

“Our school leaders are experienced enough to know that one elementary school student kissing another on the cheek is not grounds to call police,” the statement said.

“This school’s administration did exactly what they were supposed to do and what every parent would expect — and demand — they do as school leaders,” it added.

Earlier reports suggested that the administrator had initially contacted DCF to report the kiss.

“They called us and said they caught two children kissing on the playground,” Sgt. Stephanie Eller told Fox News Radio. “The reality is it was probably something innocent between two kids on the playground.”

Eller said the deputies took a report and documented the incident, but determined no crime had been committed.

“If it had been a crime at all it would have been a simple battery,” Eller said. “The battery consists of the unwanted touching of one person to another.”

“At this point, it doesn’t look like we have anyone who was an unwilling participant in this,” she said, referring to the playground smooch.

Eller said no one was arrested and that she suspected the school was being overly cautious.

Joe Donzelli, a spokesman for Lee County Public Schools, had told the Naples News that school district employees are required to call DCF if they suspect abuse.

I’m 21 this year. I started taking prednisone in late 2006 to treat ulcerative colitis. During this time I had developed a lot of disorders caused by prednisone side effects. these include joint pain, hair loss, facial hair growth, fattening of face and neck, mood swing, and bruising on the legs that would not cure for long time.

I stopped taking prednisone in late 2007 and had not taken it again since then. now it’s been nearly 2 years since i got off prednisone but some of those synptoms still exist on me. i still frequently have joint pain, and there are still a few bruises on my legs that i got from those days and still hadn’t cured.. and my face is still slightly bloated around the lower cheek, even though the neck had slimmed down.. and my facial hair still grows at a very rapid rate. but my ulcerative colitis has flared up a few times since i stopped prednisone.

i recently learnt about Cushing’s syndrome and realised that my symptoms seem to remsemble the disorder. but I don’t know what I can do to treat it. most of the websites out there emphasise on stopping prednisone intake, but i’ve already stopped taking it. what else should i do? any ideas?
