(CBS/AP) WEATHERFORD, Texas – A 63-year-old Texas woman who was allegedly held captive and tortured for 12 days told jurors Wednesday that she prayed repeatedly throughout her ordeal.

“I prayed all the time: silently, mentally,” the woman testified Wednesday during the trial of Jeffrey Allan Maxwell, 59, who could face life in prison if convicted of aggravated kidnapping and two counts of aggravated sexual assault.

The woman, who the Associated Press did not identify because she is a victim of sexual assault, testified that her legs were chained to a bed, she was locked in a nearly airtight wooden box, and was tortured on a deer-skinning device by Maxwell, her former neighbor in rural North Texas.

One of her repeated prayers was: “God, don’t let Jeff kill me! God, please spare my life!”

Defense attorneys did not make an opening statement and are expected to cross-examine her Thursday.

The woman told jurors that in years past, Maxwell would occasionally chat with her when he lived half a mile from her home outside Weatherford, but she told him to keep away when he started coming on too strong by asking to kiss her.

In 2005, Maxwell moved to Corsicana, a town about 100 miles away.

But in March 2011, he came to her house, sprayed something in her eyes and started dragging her as she grabbed onto a barbed-wire fence, she testified. He shackled her hands and feet and hit her twice in the head. she briefly escaped and ran down the road before he caught up with her and forced her into the back of his SUV at gunpoint, she said.

He then took her into his garage, whipped and sexually assaulted her while she was suspended naked on a deer-skinning device, she said.

The woman said she is a devout Christian who had never married and had no sexual experiences before the ordeal. she said she didn’t understand what was happening, and worried God may not forgive her.

After about a week, she Maxwell stopped assaulting her because he became ill, but he occasionally asked her to sit on his lap while he watched television and he touched her breasts.

She said he let her read the Bible but chained her leg to the bed each night. He once left a cellphone out, but she said she didn’t know how to use it and thought he might hear her — and kill her — if she tried calling for help.

Maxwell convinced her that someone hired him to kill her, and she told jurors Wednesday that she still believed his story.

Earlier, jurors saw items authorities seized from Maxwell’s house and car, including blood-stained underwear, guns, a long wooden box with a lid, duct tape, pepper spray, whips, handcuffs and a pair of the woman’s shoes.

Defense attorneys have objected to entering the evidence at the trial, questioning whether authorities had obtained proper search warrants before collecting items from Maxwell’s house.

CANBERRA, Australia – an Australian tourist bungee jumping in Africa plunged 365 feet into a river when her cord snapped, but she managed to swim to safety with a broken collarbone and her legs tied together.

Erin Langworthy told Nine Network television news Sunday that she blacked out briefly when she hit the Zambesi River on the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe on Dec. 31.

“I felt like I’d been slapped all over,” the 22-year-old from Perth said.

Video taken of the jump shows the cord snapping and Langworthy smacking into the river before the current pulled her into rapids.

“You get sucked under and then you pop up so it’s very disorienting — I didn’t know which was up or down,” she said.

She said the trailing cord repeatedly snagged, so she “had to swim down and yank the bungee cord out of whatever it was caught on to make it to the surface.”

Langworthy swam through the rapids to reach the Zimbabwe bank.

Southern Province Police Commissioner Brenda Muntemba told the Post Zambia newspaper that Langworthy was treated at a clinic in Zimbabwe before being evacuated to South Africa.

The jump from the Victoria Falls Bridge is operated by Safari Par Excellence, whose website describes the bungee experience as “111 meters (365 feet) of pure Adrenalin!”

Minutes five and six: Jump Rope. Same as minutes three and four. keep thinking, I am losing body fat.

Minutes six and seven: Back to the Squat Thrust and Push Up only this time you are going to add the Leg Lift. This is the same as minutes two and three only this time you will lift the toes of one foot about twelve inches off of the ground only after you have performed your push up. Lower your foot and repeat on the other side. Hop back up to your squat position, stand up, and start again. Keep thinking, goodbye belly.

Minutes seven and eight: Jump Rope. Same as minutes three and four. Keep thinking, my belly is getting smaller.

Minutes eight and nine: Back to the Squat Thrust and Push Up only this time you are going to add Mountain Climbers. Repeat everything as in minutes two and three only this time after your push up, you will quickly jog in place from your push up position. make sure you bring your knees up to your chest on each rotation. Perform 5 jogs and repeat this entire process. Keep thinking, I am going to lose weight.

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – A college student was released from the hospital Thursday after surviving what she said was a nine-day ordeal of being stuck in her car in the snow with no heavy coat, blankets or gloves and only two candy bars for food.

Authorities are still not clear about why 23-year-old Lauren Weinberg drove to the desolate mountain area of Arizona during finals week at Arizona State University before she was rescued Wednesday.

She was less than a mile from a ranch and in an area that had cell phone service. She told authorities her phone wasn’t working, and her car could not be seen from the ranch, where workers plowed through 10 inches of snow to get her out.

Authorities and the U.S. Forest Service workers who found Weinberg said they had no reason to doubt her story of survival amid 2 feet of snow and temperatures that plunged to near zero. one of the people who rescued her said he could see floor mats draped over Weinberg’s legs while she sat in her car, which still had gas.

“You can say survival skills or a miracle, either way,” Phoenix police Officer James Holmes, whose agency was investigating her disappearance. “But the good thing is she’s home and safe.”

It was one of two snow rescues in the Southwest on Wednesday. A Texas family found themselves struggling to breathe after nearly two days in their SUV after it was buried under 4 feet of snow and ice on a rural New Mexico highway.

Two Forest Service employees on snowmobiles found Weinberg about 45 miles southeast of Winslow while checking gates on forest roads. one of them had checked the same gate the morning of Dec. 12 — the day Weinberg said she became stranded and a day after she was last seen at her mother’s home in Phoenix — but didn’t spot anything.

Weinberg had the two candy bars with her and later told a deputy that she put snow in a water bottle and placed it atop the sedan to melt it for drinking water.

She had been driving with no specific destination, traveling south from Winslow toward the Mogollon Rim — a prominent line of cliffs that divides the state’s high country from the desert, Coconino County sheriff’s spokesman Gerry Blair said. the area is frequented mostly by firewood gatherers, hunters and local ranchers.

After the paved road turned into a dirt road, Weinberg stopped at a fence line to move a gate and her vehicle got stuck in the snow, Blair said.

Forest Service worker Bob McDonald said he called out to see if anyone was around the vehicle, and Weinberg opened the back door, looking surprised and relieved.

Gary Strickland, who was trailing McDonald on a second snowmobile, gave Weinberg his fleece jacket and she consumed a packaged lunch, bag of chips and water they had given her. Weinberg used Strickland’s cell phone to call family, picking up on a signal from the cell phone tower on the private ranch about a half-mile up the road.

“I could not even begin to predict how she could (survive), but I have no reason not to believe her story,” said McDonald. “As a parent myself, missing a child for nine days and not knowing where they are, it was extremely fortunate.”

Other than being cold, hungry and thirsty, she was in good condition, lucid and speaking coherently, Blair said.

Holmes said the family wants to enjoy Weinberg’s return and was not immediately interested in speaking with reporters. Police said Weinberg missed her final exams while she was stranded. After she was reported missing, they managed to track her through purchases at convenience stores before the trail went cold.

“I am so thankful to be alive and warm,” Weinberg said in a statement late Wednesday. “Thank you everyone for your thoughts and prayers, because they worked. there were times I was afraid but mostly I had faith I would be found.”

One member of the Texas family found in New Mexico, Yvonne Higgins, remained hospitalized with pneumonia Thursday. her husband, David Higgins, and his father were on their way to pick up the family’s vehicle after it was pulled by rescuers from the snowdrift near Springer, N.M. the family plans to return to Texas when his wife is released from the hospital, though it was unclear when that might be.

Rescuers had to dig through snow and ice to free the Higgins family, who left their home near League City, Texas, on Sunday for a ski trip in northern New Mexico. the couple and their 5-year-old daughter, Hannah, were clinging to each other and were lethargic early Wednesday.

David Higgins was able to keep the car running for a couple of hours, but when he wanted to clear the exhaust pipe, his door was blocked. He tried to shove his arm through the top of the window, but it went about 16 inches and still was covered in snow.

The family had plenty of water, sandwiches, chips and snack mix. But as the hours passed, it seemed as if they were working harder to breathe inside the buried SUV.

“We weren’t sure of it, but we think we were running out of air. that was spooky,” the 48-year-old father told the associated Press.

He eventually reached his brother in Texas by cellphone and the distress call was relayed to state police, who launched a search Tuesday evening.

Higgins had a simple message for travelers this winter: Throw a case of water and a sleeping bag in the car.

“It will be there if you need it,” he said.

I’m 21 this year. I started taking prednisone in late 2006 to treat ulcerative colitis. During this time I had developed a lot of disorders caused by prednisone side effects. these include joint pain, hair loss, facial hair growth, fattening of face and neck, mood swing, and bruising on the legs that would not cure for long time.

I stopped taking prednisone in late 2007 and had not taken it again since then. now it’s been nearly 2 years since i got off prednisone but some of those synptoms still exist on me. i still frequently have joint pain, and there are still a few bruises on my legs that i got from those days and still hadn’t cured.. and my face is still slightly bloated around the lower cheek, even though the neck had slimmed down.. and my facial hair still grows at a very rapid rate. but my ulcerative colitis has flared up a few times since i stopped prednisone.

i recently learnt about Cushing’s syndrome and realised that my symptoms seem to remsemble the disorder. but I don’t know what I can do to treat it. most of the websites out there emphasise on stopping prednisone intake, but i’ve already stopped taking it. what else should i do? any ideas?
